COLUMBUS BASE MEETING MINUTES
4 March 2017
Call to Order:
1300 – Commander, Tim Barker called the meeting to order.
COB John L. Bethea led in the salute to the flag.
Chaplain Sharon Lloyd gave the invocation.
Tolling of the lost boats was conducted by Chaplain Sharon Lloyd and COB John L. Bethea.
Welcome to all by Base Commander.
There were 24 members and guests present.
February 2017 meeting minutes are posted on the web site. There were no changes.
Correspondence – Letter from USSVI Charitable Foundation acknowledging receipt of our $100.00 donation in memory of Denver Smith.
Jim Koogler reported on the status of the Treasury accounts through the end of February 2017.
Cliff is working on the Sailing list. Hard drive went bad and web site was down for 24 hours.
Denver Smith’s daughter sent a thank you card.
Russell Shaeffer’s wife is having knee surgery
Tim’s brother is on the mend
Brian Ginnane invited by Charles Sabino was in attendance.
Galen Brady brought Bill Wright IC2(SS) and his wife Judy to the meeting.
It was brought up to have a meeting on the idea of having a table set up at the VA this summer to stir interest in the Columbus base.
Galen is in the process of talking to Mike Hogan and would also like to get in contact with Rob Burk
April 8 - Submarine Birthday / Tolling Ceremony – VFW Hilliard (Note date change)
April/May TBD - Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS), Bob McDaniel, Bill Anderson. Shooting for May to start up again.
Bob is checking on a boy who is unable to attend school but is using technology from home to attend his classes. Bob is going to check with the school to see if the base can stop by and present Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) to him.
May 6 - Noon Base Meeting, American Legion Leasure-Blackston 239, 700 Morning Street, Worthington, OH 43085
May 29 (Monday) – Worthington Memorial Day parade 1000 step off.
June 3 (Saturday) – Noon Base Meeting, American Legion Leasure-Blackston 239, 700 Morning Street, Worthington, OH 43085
Frank has started the inventory of the Columbus submarine museum articles. Has found that there are triple and double of books. He is looking into maybe selling some of them. Has gone through about 10 boxes and has about 15 to go. Has a lot of paper information in the inventory that wouldn’t be relevant to a museum.
John Bethea mentioned that some American Legion bikers had went to Dave and Busters but could not enter until they turned their vest inside out because the vest displayed a patch of the American Flag.
Michael Thurston is presenting two Eagle Scout awards in Newark.
For the good of the Order:
Vic Vanhorn, Central District Commander, to visit Columbus Base at April 8th Tolling Ceremony.
Honor Flight Columbus volunteer rally meeting, Saturday March 11, 10-11:30 at Grace Polaris Church, 8225 Worthington Galena Rd (Lazelle Rd entrance). The meeting is for new as well as seasoned volunteers.

Clutch mentioned the NJROTC has been invited to attend the 2019 D-Day ceremonies in France and England.
