COLUMBUS BASE MEETING MINUTES 7 May 2016

Call to Order:
1300 – Commander, Tim Barker called the meeting to order. Bob McDaniel led in the salute to the flag. Chaplain Walt Fleak gave the invocation. Tolling of the lost boats was conducted by Chaplain Sharon Lloyd and Bob McDaniel. Welcome to all by Base Commander. There were 21 members and guests present.

Secretary’s Report:
April 2016 meeting minutes are posted on the web site. There were no changes.

Correspondence: – A note was shared from CDR. Peppel.

Treasurer’s Report: – Jim Koogler reported on the status of the Treasury through the end of April 2016.

Webmaster’s Report: – The website is up and running. A PDF file of the meeting minutes and the Sailing list is available on the website.

Chaplain’s Report: – A card was signed by all and mailed to George Petershagen.

Membership Report/Introductions:
New members and guests in attendance included: none
Rick Freeman talked to David Smith, QM1(SS) who was on USS Clamagore with Tim Barker.
David lives in Marysville and is planning to be at a future meeting.

Committee Reports:
Activities
o May 25 – (Wednesday) Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS), 2 PM Children’s Hospital
o May 28 – (Saturday) 1:30 PM, Flags on Graves at Resurrection Cemetery
o May 30 – (Monday) Worthington Memorial day Parade, 1000 Step Off
o June 4 – (Saturday) Base Meeting, Worthington American Legion Post 239.
o July 4 – (Monday) Upper Arlington Parade
o July 9 – (Saturday) Base Meeting, Worthington American Legion Post 239.
o July 30 – (Saturday) Cod Base Visit and Picnic with Cod, Toledo and Requin bases and Piper reunion.

Unfinished Business:
Columbus Base Submarine Museum
o Any items that have been donated that you would like to have back?
o Looking at other submarine museums that might want the items.
o St. Mary’s Submarine Museum is full. Galin Brady at Swordfish reunion.
o Cod – Jim Tolson: Cod base is trying to reach consensus on what they want to do.
o Cincy base donated their museum items to Silver Sides museum per Dick Young.

New Business:
None

For the good of the Order:
o Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS), Bob McDaniel passed around the new K4K challenge coin that will be passed out at Children’s Hospital. All are invited to participate.

o Rick Freeman reported that Freightliner in Hilliard is working to repair and repaint the boat. It has taken a lot more work than originally estimated, but it will be fixed correctly and be ready for the Worthington Day parade. The trailer tag has been renewed and moved to the Columbus Base USSVI name.

o NJROTC awards were presented at Franklin Heights May 4 (Tolson) and CCHS NJROTC May 5 (Barker).

o Walt Fleak agreed to pull the submarine in the May 30 Worthington Memorial Day parade.

o Walt Fleak was approved to borrow the submarine float for VBS at his church. Walt will be there with the submarine float.

o July 30th Cod Base picnic in Cleveland will include lunch at about 1 PM, light off the diesel engines and sharing sea stories. Parking and more information will be sent out when obtained.

o The 2016 Columbus Base calendar was passed out to all members.

o Since Columbus Base is no longer involved with Highway Cleanup, the grabbers and vests are being donated to other groups that are still participating in the program.

o Bill Anderson reported on Honor Flight. Sept is a Female only flight, October is Purple Heart only flight. WWII, Korean and Viet Nam era vets are now going.

o 50/50 drawing. Pictures on the web site show the winners.
