COLUMBUS BASE MEETING MINUTES
4 November 2017

Call to Order:

1300:
Commander, Tim Barker called the meeting to order.
COB John Bethea led in the salute to the flag.
Chaplain Walt Fleak gave the invocation.
Tolling of the lost boats was conducted by Chaplain Sharon Lloyd and John Bethea.
Welcome to all by Base Commander.
There were 21 members and guests present.

Secretary’s Report:

October 2017 meeting minutes are posted on the web site. There were no changes.

Correspondence:
Received correspondence October 16, 2017 from the USS SCORPION, SSN-589 50TH Anniversary Memorial Committee
expressing appreciation for participating in their fundraising campaign.
Also received correspondence October 17, 2017 from the US Submarine Veterans Charitable Foundation
expressing appreciation for the donation to the USSVI Scholarship Fund.

Treasurer’s Report:

Jim Koogler reported on the status of the Treasury accounts through the end of October 2017.

Webmaster’s Report:

Cliff reported that there were no changes to the web site.

Chaplain’s Report:

Don Crinkey has lung cancer and are not able to operate.
George Petershagen had cataract surgery.

Membership Report/Introductions:

Rick has talked to two possible new members.
Frank passed out two cards to a couple of sub vets.
Galin has met a recruiter in Newark who is a submariner on active duty.

Activities

November 7 - Election Day -VOTE

November 9 – (Thursday) Columbus Veteran Parade, Step off Noon at nationwide Blvd & High.
Ends at Broad & S. Civic Center Dr. Walk north back up Marconi Blvd if you park Around Nationwide Blvd.
Bill Anderson will be pulling.
The reason for the parade being on Thursday and not Friday is the government employees have Friday off.

November 11 – (Saturday) Hilliard Veterans Parade, Step off 10 AM, Hilliard fair grounds, plenty of parking.
Bill Anderson will be pulling.

November 12 – (Sunday) Logan Veterans Parade – Step off 3 PM Galin pulling. Meal will be provided after the parade.

December 2 – Christmas Dinner, Hilliard VFW

Unfinished Business:

Inventory Status – Frank took some stamps to a dealer but he was trying to make a deal.
There maybe someone from Chicago that may be interested in looking at the material

New Business:

None

For the good of the Order:

Columbus Base Officers for 2018. The base bylaws allow officers to serve two consecutive terms in the same position.
We need a treasurer since Clutch has served two terms. Any other nominations for positions are also welcomed.

USSVI Insurance – Base needs to pay $25.00 a year to subsidize the USSVI insurance

USSVI and Base Dues – Can be paid now until the end of the year.

Base Shipmate of the Year – Send in your nominations to Tim, Jim, or Clutch.
Galin recognized and thanked Jim and Clutch for all the work they have done for the base.

CCHS NJROTC Spaghetti Dinner, Sunday 19 Nov 2017, noon 1600,
American Legion, Paschall Post #164, 3363 McDowell Road, Grove City, Ohio 43123
Tickets: at the door, $6 adults, $3 children, best time 1330-1530 when it is less crowded.
Clutch will be sending out notification if this activity is still on.

Open discussion from floor

Jim Smelser gave the base some Highway Patrol patches to be used in the 50/50 drawing.

Wade Kiger called Jim to give him an update on his status.

Bill Anderson picked up new flags to be displayed on the float.

After the parades the float will go back to the trucking company for touch ups before being stored for the winter.

Columbus base put up flags at the Honor Flight 5k run held at the airport.
Thanks to Bill Anderson, Bob McDaniel, and Frank Lloyd for helping out with the setup.

Storekeeper Frank (or Sharon) Lloyd. Frank will be ordering the 2018 calendars.

50/50 drawing
History was made in the Columbus Base 50/50 drawing as Bob Frier won with his one ticket.
