COLUMBUS BASE MEETING MINUTES 3 March 2018
Call to Order:
1300 – Commander, Tim Barker called the meeting to order.
COB John Bethea led in the salute to the flag.
Chaplain Walt Fleak gave the invocation.
Tolling of the lost boats was conducted by Chaplain Walt Fleak and John Bethea.
Welcome to all by Base Commander.
There were 24 members and guests present.
February 2018 meeting minutes are posted on the web site. There were no changes.
Correspondence – None.
No report given. Clutch was out.
Columbus web site is up and running.
USSVI web site has a new look.
Bob Frier reported that Don Crinky is getting stronger and is using a walker to get around.
Don said to say hi to all of the members.
James Motley was in attendance and introduced himself.
Qualified on the USS Nathaniel Greene (SSBN 636), 1985.
Bill Foreman was in attendance.
Daniel J. O’Connor Franklin County Recorder and team were in attendance to provide veteran ID cards for members that didn’t have them.
April 7 – Submarine Birthday/Tolling Ceremony – VFW Hilliard. RSVP attendance by Saturday March 31, 2018 to Clutch.
May 5 – Noon Base Meeting, American Legion Leasure-Blackston 239, 700 Morning Street, Worthington, OH 43085
Inventory Status – The inventory of the patches has been completed and there are over 3,000 patches.
Mike Thurston mentioned that he performed an eagle scout presentation earlier in the month.
Bill Anderson is in the process of getting magnetic Honor Flight signs to put on his truck during the parades.

Get your Vet ID if you brought your DD-214.
Rick Freeman. This was a great idea and many members took advantage of the opportunity.
Status of the parade sub paint repair – Rick / Galin – Rick talked to Freightliner and they told him they are currently backed up working on trucks but will get to the boat as soon as possible. Rick also ask for new buntings for the corners of the trailer which would be around $74.00. Galin mentioned that he may have some.
Thanks to Rick Freeman and Walt Fleak for setting up the boat at the VA February 12-16. Since having the boat at the VA we have had lots of inquiries and a few calls.
2018 USSVI Convention cruise – Oct 21-28, 2018 www.ussvicruise.com/ As of 23FEB18, 372 have signed up including Todd VanKirk & Bill Anderson.
April 7 Tolling / Birthday dinner invitation. Payment of $22/meal to Columbus Base can be mailed to Clutch Koogler, Base Treasurer.

Cliff went over the dangers of Lithium-Ion Batteries. Lithium-Ion batteries will explode within 50 milliseconds when it fails. When storing the batteries discharge them down to at least 20 percent. Always charge the batteries with the charger that came with them. Using a different charger could over charge the batteries. An indication that the batteries are failing is the battery package will begin to swell and get hot.
