It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of our WWII shipmate Denver Smith, EM1(SS). He qualified on the USS Grayling (SS-209) in 1943.
Denver was born on April 7, 1925 and passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2017.
Denver was a resident of Bucyrus, Ohio at the time of his passing. He was proud to have received his diploma from Bucyrus High School in 2002. He was married to Maxine who preceded him in death.
No public services will be held at this time but a memorial celebration is being planned for later this year in Bucyrus. Denver will be interred in Green Mountain Cemetery in Durango, Colorado.
Memorial contributions may be given to:

Denver served in the Pacific theater in World War II, participating in no less than 5 successful war patrols. In addition to Grayling, he also served on USS Redfish (SS-395) and USS Razorback (SS-394). He was a War Prize crewman of Japanese I-401 and earned the Combat Action Ribbon w/ 4 Stars, Navy Presidential Unit Citation, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Philippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation.
As is our custom, Columbus Base will make a $100.00 donation to the USSVI Scholarship Fund in Denver Smith's memory.
We will miss you, Denver. We're proud to have known you and been your shipmates.
Sailor, Rest Your Oar.
